In September 2020, a three-alarm fire raged inside the Babcock Building, destroying what was a major part of the Columbia, SC, skyline for more than a century. With the help of federal funding and tax credits, the developer, Clachan Properties, has brought back a piece of capital city history. The building’s iconic cupola is being meticulously reconstructed on site and will be airlifted back to its place on the building, a testament to the commitment of preserving the building’s architectural heritage.
Located right in the middle of the largest development project in Columbia history, the building was built in 1885 and will be transformed into 208 luxury apartments with amenities.
