How did you get started in renewable energy and sustainability tax credit industry?

Prior to joining Foss & Co., I was a commercial underwriter at a community development bank. During that time, I was often tasked with underwriting our largest and most complex loans. I became the subject matter expert on loans to renewable energy projects, as well as low-income-housing projects and various other impact oriented products. While I enjoyed commercial banking, I was excited to join Foss & Co. so that I could spend more of my time focused on impact projects. I initially joined Foss & Co. as an investment manager for our real estate division, then transitioned to renewable energy to help expand our renewable energy and sustainable technologies division in Denver.

What interested you about tax credits?

The government tends to offer tax credits to incentivize projects that have a desirable outcome, either from a social or an environmental perspective. These impact projects are highly interesting to me. I wanted to become an expert in tax credits so that I could support the projects that I care about most.

When did you join and what interested you about Foss & Company?

I joined Foss & Co. in November of 2017. Prior to that, I had been working at a community development bank. I enjoyed banking, but only 25% of my time was actually spent working on “impact” transactions. The rest of my time was spent doing general banking work. Joining Foss & Company was an opportunity to spend 100% of my time working on the types of projects that I am most passionate about.

What is one thing people may not know about Foss & Company?

We have some awesome company perks! To name a few: we cover the cost for every Foss & Company employee to switch their home electricity to renewable energy; also offer half days every Friday during August; we provide flexible hybrid work options; and our renewables team in Denver works out of a bright and modern office space (I love the nitro cold brew on tap!)

Any major changes in the renewable energy tax credit industry that you are excited about or that people should be aware of?

It’s hard to overstate how exciting the Inflation Reduction Act is. It will be transformative for our industry, and will create great opportunities for our clients and partners for years to come.

Any other insights you would like to add?

I don’t think there has ever been a better time to get involved in the renewable energy industry, or to invest in tax credits. It’s an exciting time for our company and our investors – I can’t wait to see how far we can go!
